Description

september 6, 1782 | death of Martha Wayles Skelton Jefferson
-

“For four months that she lingered, he was never out of calling; when not at her bedside, he was writing in a small room which opened immediately at the head of her bed.”
When she died, Thomas Jefferson’s grief was so violent, he withdrew to his room for three weeks and destroyed any reminders of her; no portrait still exists and just four documents of her writings survived -he carried one of them with him the rest of his life along with a lock of her hair-.
He did not mention Martha’s name to anyone again and never married again.
